China's DVD Player Market to be Upbeat in 2000
nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com

May 8, 2000 (BEIJING) -- China's DVD player market is likely to pick up in 2000.

According to a recent report, about three to five million DVD players will be sold this year,
as prices are falling and market demand is growing.

However, video compact disc (VCD) players will retain their position as the mainstream
products, according to a Ministry of Information Industry official.

China sold 100,000 DVD players in 1998. In 1999, sales soared to more than one million.
The average price of DVD players has decreased from the previous RMB7,000 (US$843) to
below RMB2,000.

But a national standard for DVD players is still unavailable in China, leaving a crack for
many companies to sacrifice their product quality for lower prices.
