The company was in the process of eliminating 4,000 jobs to streamline operations and bring it into the black, executive vice president Guerrino De Luca said at a news conference. Apple also planned to modernise its computers for consumers and small businesses while offering corporate customers machines running its forthcoming Rhapsody operating system. Rhapsody would allow software developers to write programs that run on Apple Macintosh systems and PCs with Pentium chips from Intel Corp . Due in 1998, the operating system "would make a return to growth possible," De Luca said.
