Irrational?
Education is a wonder drug for conservatism and anti intellectualism, and for a healthy, happy and prosperous nation. The Nordic Countries have prove that, ANDThe Republican party is a fine example of what an uneducated populace with turn into.
Those countries that invested in good affordable education are today the most prosperous and happiest countries on the planet.
We are not born knowing how to think. We need to learn that. And it takes a long time.
As James Flynn said:" we gained 60 IQ points since we got public education.
The humanities teach people about their societies, political science, history and ethics and social theory.
Look around the world. Those countries that keep failing like Central and South America, middle east, Africa etc all have one thing in common, a lack of enough educated people to steer their countries in the right direction, and especially in the humanities.
How can a person put a democracy together if they don't understand it?
And the countries that prosper and are happiest have invested huge amounts of money in their educational systems.
The poster boy would be Norway. Super high taxes and second richest country in the world per capita and one of the most Democratic and happiest, and all because they invested heavily in education and set their country up smartly by making sure its wealth went to the people and not corporations or billionaires.
People in the countries that don't do well have two short comings that are the same as the Republican party.
1) They are not educated enough to know who a good politician is and a bad one e.g. the south sends one bad politician after another.
2) They don't understand how to put a prosperous country together politically, socially, or economically. .
And you rate accounting as high? A computer can do that. It is a fine profession, like so many others, plumber, doctor, etc, but FIRST get educated about the world you live in, develop your mind..
Look at how much more civilized humans are today than 100 years ago. That is ALL due to education.
PS half of all Doctors are Republicans. Why, because for all their brains and abilities they are not very well educated generally speaking.

Really? You appear to me to have an irrational love affair with the humanities as some wonder-drug for conservatism and anti-intellectualism that is rampant in the US. Maybe that is not your position.

It isn't in my opinion and I suffered many economic delays due to irrelevant course work which largely served as welfare for academics in the humanities.
Despite my experience. I let my kids choose their majors. Here is my scorecard.
The psych major was definitely the worst choice. It qualified the graduate from a good school nothing more than could be attained with 2 years less effort - psych tech and even then with considerable work experience. Not a good job. I'd give it a C- to a D. Despite good grades - it doesn't qualify the bearer for anything.
Not as bad as gender/ethnic studies or philosophy which I give F grades to. None of my kids did anything that dumb.
Accounting was the best and most employable. My son is on the spectrum and was employed with this right out of school with some retail work experience. I'd give this a B+ to A-.
The third child chose English. It was passable with enough work history. It showed one could write. Being from a good school it showed ability but my youngest now needs something else - MBA or finance because she lacks the math she needs in her job. I'd give this degree a B- or C+ because it is harder than most people think but not well rewarded or regarded. |
