Having said that, I was pawing through the weird science section at the book store about this same time last year, looking for some Timeless Quantum Cosmology For Dummies, or something and ran across a small book (published essay) called 'In The Beginning was the Command Line' by renowned author Neal Stephenson. Subsequently, I discovered that the essay was available in it's entirety online.

Last night, I read it for the first time (all 170 some odd pages), and I'm leveling it here as rhetorical doomsday device / blanket reply to the posts regarding *nix and the relevancy of the MS business model specific to the OS. It just kinda jumped out here in the midst of our exchange and begs to be linked from this thread.

The first link is the html read-it-online version. The one below that is a link to download an archived version to read offline (on your laptop while driving or whatever).

This is quality stuff and worth the time, when you have the time.
