Rhe religious connotation has been lost a bit from Your Burns quotation. It always seemed significant to me that that particular quote was inspired by a visit to the Kirk (church), where Burns sat watching the antics of one or more lice in the hair of the lady sitting in front of him.

If you want to look up the reference I believe it's entitled "Ode to a Louse".
