Paul,
I have no direct insight or knowledge of AMATs' photolithography
position. I was involved in the past with the initial development of
a new product (which is the best selling semi-mfg product of all time)
and can tell you that if AMAT is developing lithography equipment
or are considering this market it will be a NEW technology.

Personal opion:

I have been waitng for some time now for AMAT to announce either
a new technology aquisition or the development of a sub-0.1u
lithography technique to push the frontiers of device size
reduction that will push technology for the next 5-10 years.

Applied Materials wants to be the undisputed technology leader,
not an also-ran. It would be a total coup to offer an entire equipment
set with guaranteed processes and yields to new fabs who purchase
the total equipment and engineering support package, think of the
potential and the profit margins.

The best is yet to come!!
