We fear the charge of hypocrisy: We Westerners after all, had slaves. We napalmed Vietnam. We live on Native American land. Who are we to judge ''others?'' And so we don't stand for all of humanity.
All part of the Litany of Self-Loathing. Someone's on the thread today, ranting about "our"* treatment of the Native Americans. Now that you've brought Sudan to our attention (yes, I admit I had no idea it was this bad), maybe he/she will find a new outlet for his/her wrath.
Re: Sudan. We should do something. What can we do?
*Lots of Americans are not descended from people who mistreated Indians, e.g, probably you. But you are being accused of collective guilt because you are an American, and thus, by inheritence, an oppressor.
The absurdity of accusing second generation Americans whose parents were Russians, Croatians, Iranians, Nigerians, etc., of oppressing Native Americans is lost on them. |
