(Nasdaq: OPWV), the combination of Phone.com and Software.com, and Siemens today announced that the companies have been chosen by China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC), China's largest mobile carrier and the world's largest single operator network, to supply mobile Internet services to subscribers in China, including four of CMCC's largest markets. Under the terms of the agreement, CMCC will be using the Openwave(TM) WAP-compatible UP.Link(TM) Server and Mobile Management Server (MMS) subscriber auto-registration technology to enable wireless Internet access to over half of its subscriber base. CMCC had more than 66 MM subscribers at the end of 2000 and is the country's dominant operator, owning 80% of the cellular market share in China.

Openwave's technology will provide wireless Internet access to subscribers in 11 provinces throughout China, covering a total population of 475 MM people, including Guangdong, Zhejiang, Fujian and Shandong, 4 of CMCC's top 5 mobile subscriber provinces. In addition, CMCC will make the technology available in Shanghai, Hainan, Guangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Tibet. Using the Openwave technology, CMCC subscribers will be able to access their e-mail, information-on-demand services such as news, stock trading, stock charting, online shopping, flight and train schedules, online games, horoscope, and other localized information. In addition, subscribers will have personal information management services, such as calendaring functions and personal organizers. Deployment of these WAP-based services is planned for the first calendar quarter of 2001.
With Openwave's MMS subscriber auto-registration technology, CMCC enables its subscribers to seamlessly activate their mobile Internet service through their handsets. This automated solution promotes rapid consumer adoption, greater customer control and increased customer satisfaction while significantly lowering CMCC's operating costs.
One of Siemens joint venture companies in China, Siemens Shanghai Mobile Communications Ltd. (SSMC), will implement the backbone WAP-Gateway Systems using Openwave's technology in Shanghai and Guangzhou with the capacity for more than 1,000,000 mobile Internet subscribers.
