I'm sure AOL would write Microsoft a billion dollar check for MSN as long as it was payable in AOL stock. But that would be worth about 25 cents on the dollar. Bill Gates is a smart businessman, smarter than Steve Case, and would only sell MSN because the proprietary online content business is hopeless. With just a single cable TV channel Bill Gates has more passive advertising eyeballs than AOL will ever have, and with no busy signals and bogged down transmission speeds.
