Two great books for English-speakers - 'The Log From The Sea Of Cortés' by John Steinbeck, his only (I think) non-fiction work. True story of his trip in the early 40s with his marine biologist friend Ed Ricketts, who liked women with thick lips, and who has an institute named after him, I think in San Diego.
And 'The Lawless Roads' by Graham Greene - one of his few non-fiction works, the true story of his journey to Palenque in 1938, ostensibly to view the ruins but in fact to check out the state of the Catholic Church which had been brutally repressed by the Calles government. Out of print and hard to find, I am looking for a copy for a friend and having no luck, but I've found it in several libraries and am considering stealing a copy.
Both great books by great writers, and both give insight into México today, imho.
lib.nmsu.edu - 'Internet Resources for Latin America' .... from this one you can go anywhere ... lots of English as well as castellano. |
