My followup thoughts on the matter, which I tried to post at Smartmoney.com's forums (which are acting flaky at the moment):
---
The shooting occurred a few miles away from where I work so it
hits home.

Daytraders have been unfairly stigmatized and this incident
will further that thinking. Daytrading is simply the pursuit of
arbitrage opportunities in the free market. Pure
capitalism. I'm not a daytrader nor an
enthusiast for such an avocation. I find it unlikely that most
daytraders can actually make it their career over the long
term.

To blame this murder spree on daytrading is ridiculous.
Whenever there was fallout from his reckless behavior,
Barton's solution was to kill anyone nearby.
Barton was a butcher that should have been arrested in
1993 after he slaughtered his ex-wife and her mother.
Draconian daytrading regulations, on the other hand,
would not have saved these innocent bystanders.

With that said, if we hit the mother-of-all-bear-markets, then
this unprecedented bull run will be a distant memory. If that
happens, then all the recent Internet stock-pumped gains that
made these daytraders look like geniuses will end up gutting
them.
