Mr. Goody, spam is not wanted by most Internet users. It is against policy at most ISPs and, indeed, the ISP through which this spam was sent terminated Sutton's account because it did violate their policy.

While spam is, in most cases, legal at this point (although some tactics used by some spammers ARE illegal - for example, forging return addresses) that doesn't make it right or wanted or admirable.

Yes, there are many large public corporation that advertise using e-mail. For the most part, this is "opt-in" advertising, where the company has received the person's explicit permission. These are typically "user newsletters", "new product newsletters" etc. which are sent to customers or those that have inquired about a product.

I assure you, though, that they aren't engaging in unsolicited spamming such as this. No large public company would risk the backlash from engaging in spam.
