Israel's Alvarion gets China Telecom Corp deal
TEL AVIV, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Israel's Alvarion (NasdaqNM:ALVR - News), a maker of wireless broadband equipment, said on Monday that China Telecom Corp (HKSE:0728.HK - News; NYSE:CHA - News) has chosen its products for deployment in four north China provinces. Alvarion did not disclose the value of the deal.
In a statement, Alvarion said China Telecom was awarded licences to operate 3.5 gigahertz broadband wireless access (BWA) networks in the second round of China's frequency licensing process.
After an evaluation process, China Telecom decided on four vendors, two of which are Alvarion's partners in China -- Beijing International Switching System Corp, a joint venture between Siemens (XETRA:SIEGn.DE - News) and Chinese enterprises, and Datang Telecom Technology (Shanghai:600198.SS - News).
Alvarion said it has now achieved initial commercial deliveries with all four of China's major telecom services providers of fixed and cellular lines: China Telecom, China Netcom, China Mobile (HKSE:0941.HK - News; NYSE:CHL - News) and China Unicom (HKSE:0762.HK - News; NYSE:CHU - News).
"Over the long term we believe China's huge population, growing broadband demand and lack of suitable infrastructure make it an attractive region for wireless solutions," said Zvi Slonimsky, Alvarion chief executive in a statement.
China Telecom provides wireline telephone, data and Internet and leased line services to the Shanghai municipality and provinces in China. The company was established in 2002 after the split of the former China Telecom. |
