Bahrain: Batelco picks Ericsson to upgrade networks

03 January 2006
Batelco has selected Ericsson to upgrade its GSM Core, Radio and Service Networks. This investment is part of the company's ongoing drive to boost the capabilities of its networks to help offer world-class and innovative services to customers. This, in turn, will allow the leading operator in the Kingdom to fulfil the needs and exceed expectations of its increasing number of subscribers.

Under the agreement, Ericsson will enhance Batelco's GSM network coverage and capacity for both voice and data services, boosting their existing nationwide high speed EDGE data access capabilities. The agreement also includes the expansion of the mobile network's capacity up to 650,000 subscribers. It also allows the launch of new mobile services in Bahrain, such as video streaming at high speed data services.

General Manager Networks at Batelco, Ebrahim Zainal: "This network enhancement is one of a series of initiatives that the company is embarking on and aimed at further enhancing our customers experience. We understand that it's the quality of service that matters in competition and not the service itself, as all competitors offer similar services and products. Therefore, we must ensure that our customers receive the highest quality service levels available in the marketplace."

General Manager of Ericsson in Bahrain, Johan Lojdquist, said: "This strategic decision by Batelco will allow them to boost their mobile communications capabilities and launch new services; particularly targeting the youth and businesses segments."
