There is an article in Scientific American, June 1996.
Traditionally ultrasound uses the strength of the relected sound, the echo to image something. Acuson has found a way to use the change in phase that also occurs to add more detail to the image. They can image blood cells let alone blood moving through the arterioles of the heart... no other ultrasound maker can do that. They can see blockages where they could not be seen before... The technique is portable and totally non-invasive... No large ct scanners (like IMAT) or mri for this sort of diagnostic ability.
The clinical reports are that doctors can see and diagnose things that they could not see before with ultrasound. After a 200 million dollar r&d investment, it's not likely competitors will catch up soon.
They're p&e sucks because of that... And they announced that will take a loss this & next qtr as part of startup cost of this product. But it looks like a winner in many ways... That p&e should start to fall later this year!
