From today's Washington Times
District of Columbia officials are urging residents to prepare for more than a week without private and public services as the new year approaches, though most other jurisdictions have advised being prepared for only a few days.
The D.C. Emergency Management Agency's "Y2K Preparedness Guide" tells readers to "store a supply of seven to ten days worth of nonperishable foods per person."
It also warns residents to "set aside enough cash to meet living expenses for at least a one-month period" and "consider renting or purchasing a generator."

Ron,
I don't sense much concern about Y2K in D.C. and environs - except for this article. Was surprised to see this. I'm not familiar with Washington Times though. Only Washington Post.
What's your sense of the mood around D.C.? A cousin (thru marriage) is Financial Director for a city in Virginia, just outside D.C. - and he's been scoffing at Y2K for 2 years. Christmas of '98 he said they had already fixed everything - LOL. But lately they've started to stockpile food, water, etc.
Another cousin with IBM in North Carolina (who originally scoffed), now has a generator and his wife (also with IBM) has been canning a bunch of stuff ... and is now taking it very seriously.
I have an aunt who requires MAJOR surgery at Cleveland Clinic. She rescheduled her surgery to DECEMBER 31 because she wanted to spend time with the family over the Christmas holiday ... and because the government said that there shouldn't be in major problem over the rollover:-(
I have a friend, who's husband is an oil lobbyist. I told them not to travel abroad during the rollover. But, they wanted to celebrate New Years in Paris. Now this happens:
PARIS, Dec 28 (AFP) ... The country's power grid was devastated by the storms, with electricity to 3.4 million homes cut off early Tuesday and litte hope of restoring much of the service before the weekend, the state utility EDF said.
As temperatures in some areas dropped to freezing, Jean-Pierre Bourdier, a spokesman for Electricite de France, said 36 high-voltage lines were out of service, representing a quarter of the national grid ... greenspun.com
Couldn't have happened at a worse time. This has to impact last minute Y2K remediation efforts.
My "ex" is riding out Y2K on a cruise thru French Polynesia, and will be in Bora Bora in early January. Sounds good. Except most of the food is flown in from France!
Things are really schizophrenic these days. These are interesting times.
