Siemens Semiconductors and ECI Telecom Partner to Develop Next Generation of ADSL Modem Chipset CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 23, 1988--Siemens Semiconductors and ECI Telecom Ltd. (NASDAQ/NM symbol: ECILF - news) today announced their co-operation in developing the chipset for the next generation of high-speed data transfer systems. The two companies are working together on the definition and design of a DMT ADSL chipset, which will be sold as part of Siemens' POTSWIRE xDSL portfolio.
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) systems allow data transfer rates of more than 100 times higher than current 56Kbit/s or ISDN modems. ADSL solutions enable fast Internet access, video on demand services and many other broadband applications using existing copper data transfer line infrastructure.
In this partnership Siemens is developing and manufacturing the semiconductor platform. ECI Telecom contributes its DSL based system expertise and the algorithms which are incorporated into the new CARMEL DSP based data pump.
Dr. Hermann Eul, vice president and general manager of Siemens Semiconductors' digital transceiver division, said, ''ECI Telecom's algorithm expertise and experience in developing advanced telecommunication systems perfectly match our long-term success in digital and mixed signal design. Therefore this cooperation is a key for Siemens Semiconductors to become a leading supplier in the emerging ADSL market.''
Mr. Uri Kashti, ECI Telecom's corporate vice president and general manager for access solutions, said, ''ECI Telecom has two strategic assets invested in the new chipset: its unique experience in field deployment of DMT technology and over a decade's experience in DSL system design. These assets translate to algorithms that are designed to tackle the service provider's local loop requirements.''
The DSP-based architecture allows for future upgrades to next-generation standards by software download and additionally handles the ADSL control software. The ADSL control software was designed to minimize the load on host controllers and enable very quick software integration. With its advanced operating modes such as ''ADSL over ISDN'', ''Double upstream'', or even ''G.lite'', it offers huge flexibility. Due to high integration and low power consumption, this chipset meets the cost-efficiency needs of telecommunications service providers.
The ADSL chipset key features include:
-- highly integrated chipset (containing only three chips). -- low power consumption of below 3 W for high-density designs, including line driver -- digital data pump with UTOPIA Level 2 interface for ATM -- optimized analog front-ends for remote and central office side and a line driver. -- fully compliant with the ANSI T1.413 Category 2 Issue 2 standard. -- allows data transmission of over 8 Mbit/s down stream and 640 kbit/s up stream. -- program and interleaving memory. -- Digital Controlled Crystal Oscillator (DCXO) on silicon. Availability
The new chip-set's front-end and line driver are already available. The digital data pump will follow in the second quarter of 1999. More information on Siemens Semiconductors POTSWIRE ADSL solutions can be found on the World Wide Web at siemens.com
