Marengi is in Peking because a high level Clinton trade team is there He wants to sell something to the Chinese. Thats good. Thats his job. Comdex is a great place to announce vaporware of significance, to people with the attention span of half a sales pitch. Bill Gates will give keynote address in which he predicts the future. Most people dread entering those vast halls. Every time I hear Comdex I think of how badly my feet hurt on the concrete, how I lost my voice, and the year Visicorp was prom queen snubbing suitors and Compaq was in a small booth with its magic box. Do you think Novell's management remembers Visicorp? If I were Novell I wouldn't send Marengi to COmdex. Instead rent a hotel penthouse ballroom with a view and serve shrimp, steak, lobster, champagne, and caviar. Hire some first class artists to put on a show. And invite all of the hostile press to sit and relax and forget about the Comdex hype. Pressure no one and pitch noone.
