In the interview, Ms. Knox states that she does not believe the memos are genuine. However, she confirms that the content of the memos does reflect the feelings of Lt. Col. Killian at the time and accurately portrays events that were taking place in connection with then-Lt. Bush’s Texas Air National Guard service. “I know that I didn’t type ‘em. However, the information in those is correct,” Ms. Knox told CBS News for tonight’s broadcast. In light of the questions about that original 60 MINUTES Wednesday report, CBS News states that it will redouble its efforts to continue reporting aggressively on all aspects of the story, in an effort to resolve those questions. Tonight’s 60 MINUTES interview with Ms. Knox is part of that effort.
The CBS News report was based on a preponderance of evidence: many interviews, both on- and off-camera, with individuals with direct and indirect knowledge of the situation, atmosphere and events of the period in question, as well as the procedures, character and thinking of Lt. Col. Killian, Lt. Bush’s squadron commander in the Guard, at the time. Here's more: Mary Mapes, the producer of the report and a well-respected, veteran journalist whose credibility has never been questioned, has been following this story for more than five years. She has a vast and detailed knowledge of the issues surrounding President Bush’s service in the Guard and of the individuals involved in the story. Before the report was broadcast, it was vetted and screened in accordance with CBS News standards by several veteran 60 MINUTES Wednesday senior producers and CBS News executives. If she is so familiar with the topic, why did she not recognize and/or address why this memo looks so different from the time period? Ah, here I go on another line-by-line analysis again...
UPDATE: I will fisk the whole thing after dinner.
ATTENTION, DAN RATHER: YOU'RE LOSING JUAN WILLIAMS [09/15 06:49 PM]
NPR's Juan Williams, on Fox All-Star’s panel (ah, to join such an all-star team!) has been the most pro-CBS voice in the group as of late. And now, he’s slipping. He started to say something about the serious questions raised by the report about Bush, but when Brit Hume asked whether he this story and this sourcing would meet his standards, he just gave up the fight and joined the gang tackle on Rather's shoddy story. “[CBS] is going to lose all their credibility if they can’t prove that these documents are true,” Williams said.
BIZARRE CBS STATEMENT: WE'RE REDOUBLING EFFORTS [09/15 06:18 PM]
From Drudge:
Statement by the President of CBS News, Andrew Heyward: "We established to our satisfaction that the memos were accurate or we would not have put them on television. There was a great deal of coroborating [sic] evidence from people in a position to know. Having said that, given all the questions about them, we believe we should redouble our efforts to answer those questions, so that's what we are doing."
My readers keep impressing me with their funny and insightful reactions, as I sit here, stunned by the oddity of the CBS statement.
Already several dozen Kerry Spot readers note the use of the word "accurate" instead of "authentic."
J's reaction: "How many millions of Americans haven’t done a damn thing since noon while waiting for this?" |
