Gnutella pioneer Gene Kan dies
(http://news.com.com/2100-1023-942180.html?tag=cd_mh)
Mr. Kan was only 25 but was one of Sunw's Gurus in peer-to-peer software development. He was working with Mr. Joy at Sunw's secret development lab coding the next generation software called JXTA (http://news.com.com/2100-1001-256577.html?legacy=cnet).

Sun's Joy rapturous over Jxta

His "out-of-the-box" thinking and unique approach to problem solving is why Sunw the company supported his development efforts. His work will continue at Sunw in the development lab but I am sure the group will miss his approach to difficult problem solving. It is sad that Mr. Kan had to die at such a young age (he was only 25) as he was just at the beginning of his journey through life. I am sure he would have continued to make significant contributions in this new emerging network centric environment.

Here is an excellent article describing the JXTA project: Post-Napster, Peer-to-Peer Computing Gets Ready for Prime Time Sun engineers have developed an open set of protocols called Jxta that sets the stage for a new era of distributed computing (http://www.business2.com/articles/web/0,1653,18076,FF.html)

EKS

(Note: A memorial fund is being set up in Kan's name at UC Berkeley. Donations can be sent to the following address: In memory of Gene Kan; Manager, Gift Stewardship; College of Engineering; University of California, Berkeley; 201 McLaughlin Hall; Berkeley, Calif., 94720-1722.

Checks should be made out to "UC Regents" but clearly marked for the Gene Kan fund.)
