Dubious assertions at best.

If for no other reason, it would give ammunition to the nutjobs as to how the administration was bringing socialism to the country. Scrapping them was the simplest answer to the problem of what to do with the trade-ins and who would profit.

Not that it actually stopped the nutjobs. But...
