Eric, If you think of a kimberlite pipe as being an inverted wine glass stem, then the surface area might not have a very direct correlation to the overall volume of the pipe. However, if the pipe were shaped more like a carrot, then the surface or exposed area of the pipe could provide useful information regarding the potential amount of kimberlite material that the pipe might contain.

KRT is known to have some very large pipes (ie. large in area). What shape those pipes actually have is what the drilling is all about.
