Roger Greeley was an ignoramus:

"In the gilded age, Dowagiac was an exception to most of the robber barons, in that he treated his workers with kindness and benevolence."

Above notice that he writes of Dowagiac as a person who made big bucks as a robber baron and used it to build a theater in his town.

Of course, Dowagiac is the town name and its not named after a robber baron who built a theater. As I suspected when I skimmed over it and saw the 'ac' ending, its named after an indian term:

Dowagiac is a city in Cass County, in the South Bend-Mishawaka metro area.

The community name derives from Indian term for "foraging ground".
