ESS Technology (ESST) -- Downgraded to Reduce from Buy. Analyst is Christopher Chaney, whose comments follow:

"Rating lowered to reduce today from buy based on lower guidance for the fourth qtr and lower expectations for 2001. We are lowering our estimates. DVD sales have been carrying the company of late and we are now seeing a slowdown in DVD orders. While this happens thru next year, we believe competitors will have ample opportunity to gain market share leaving little revenue growth product line for ESST. We see no reason to continue holding the shares."

ESST PR....................................................

In addition, our video revenue in the fourth quarter is below expectations because video products including DVDs and VCDs, are increasingly being exported to markets worldwide for the Christmas season and are purchased in the third quarter instead of the fourth quarter. This is a change from our historical pattern of video sales peaking in the fourth quarter to support the Chinese New Year.''
