The reason I've been coming around to the notion that the term, crusade, applies after all is that we have a kind of military/missionary mission to bring Western (Christian-based) civilization to the unenlightened. There's no lack or power and no lack of zeal. Quacks like a crusade to me, plain-English version of the word. Back in the day when the word was considered and abandoned, this was a war on al Qaeda and their ilk. It morphed with the invasion of Iraq and the goal of bringing democracy to the ME.
