Latest From McCain on V.P. Reports: 'I Hope It's Over'
By CARL HULSE - NYT

Senator John McCain wasn't saying much Monday about those weekend news reports that Senator John Kerry had personally but informally proposed the idea of Mr. McCain's joining the Democratic ticket, only to have the Arizona Republican repeatedly signal that he was not interested.

Mr. McCain stayed with the line offered by his staff last Friday that he had never been offered the vice presidency. But he would not go much beyond that, saying that if he discussed the details of his private conversations with senators in public he would not be having many more private conversations.

But Mr. McCain, who had said publicly dozens of times that he was not interested in the No. 2 slot on the Democratic ticket, was looking for one outcome out of the news that he had made that same position clear to Mr. Kerry in private. "I hope it's over," he said.
