Most consumer computers are being used primarily for internet access, and email. Some light WP, financial planning are the next common applications among adults. Among younger adults and children, games are common but relatively few are what we would consider "high end gamers."

At least that was the state of the world last time I saw a study on consumer use.

More and more, I'm hearing people talk about their computers as appliances. They sit at home and get used. Very different from cars that are actually seen in public. I don't think those people are in the camp that would upgrade just to have "the best." In fact, I can't think of a single person I know who has recently bought a top-end computer. Most have bought somewhere in the middle of the road, in terms of what's offered right now.
