Officially, true. But MSFT doesn't invest money in your company without strings attached. Their "investment" in AAPL had many strings attached, such as a five-year patent cross-license, Internet Exploder as the default browser, and Apple's dropping of their lawsuits against MSFT. AAPL was smart enough to get MSFT to agree to continue Office development in return.

You can bet that there were strategic agreements (almost certainly something that limits Corel's threat to Windows) made before MSFT decided to "invest."

You can also bet that it had nothing to do with MSFT's interest in you, the consumer.
