Fumble --

The future is here.

Dick Notebart, Ameritech's CEO, spoke of its predominant position in his Keynote address here at Supercomm. Today's Supercomm News, headlined the same thing. ATM is the hottest topic of the show. That and DSL and WDM. Talk about the trinity! :))

He spoke of reaching an inflection point where "conventional wisdom ceases to apply." Last year Ameritech spent $2 billion upgrading its system, including 1,000 Sonet rings and 153 packet data switches. "Mid year that will increase by 9." He said today the limiting factor is switching. The solution? Take systems and adapt to needs and he then gave Sprint's recent announcement as an example. "Packet switching with voice overlay."

In closing, he cautioned the audience of telecommunications and networking professionals not to get sidetracked. By that he meant not to get hung up debating protocols but to step back and see the bigger picture.

Theres more I could say, but I'm short on time.

Later --
