Of course in the more distant past both parents, and their kids, would probably be working as farmers. Also sometimes women would do work for others for money in the home. The homemaker Mom who didn't work for pay, combined with the Dad who worked in an office or factory seems to have occured a lot in say the mid 20th century, but its hardly like it was some ancient pattern which we are starting to deviate from for the first time in recent years.
