I too like divided government - but you underestimate Clinton and don't give Reagan and Bush the blame they deserve IMO. Clinton not only raised taxes but he streamlined government reducing the number of government employees - sure can't say that about Bush. Clinton also decreased spending on military spending, again another thing not generally thought of as a virtue of republicans.

The republicans under both Reagan and Bush had majorities in congress and bloated the deficit to hard to grasp levels. Instead of harping on the social domestic problems Reagan and especially Bush should have concentrated on making the programs more efficient. Had they put their efforts into that we would all be better off on programs the public is not willing to abort. Of course the Bush policy of intended bankrupting America so the programs would have to disappear is particularly dishonest to America's desires.
