Steve, I'm not trying to persuade you to vote for Clinton. I voted for Obama here in Jersey. I'm simply looking the plusses and minusses.

On the first point, you clipped my original statement at the "they will withdraw from Iraq . ." I meant the remainder of the statement to be the key. They will leave troops sprinkled throughout Iraq in some form or other. They've been rather clear about this. It's hard to know how many.

As for distinctions between Clinton and McCain, at least at the rhetorical level, they are large. McCain is committed to the notion that the surge worked and works. That leads him to favoring a much larger troop presence, to fewer statements that the Iraqis have to deal with issues themselves rather than depend on US troops to do so. And thus to a longer and larger US presence.

As for Obama's lack of specificity about the ME, you call that wisdom. It might turn out to be but it's hard to call it that right now. It's certainly not dumb either. If he can get elected without much specificity, fine. But then that just makes my point--lots of upside---and---downside. Who knows.

Actually, despite all the heat, I expect China and Russia and Pakistan to be far more important foreign policy issues in the next 4 to 8 years than the ME. And my guess is neither of these two candidates are extremely well prepared to deal with that.

Your point about Clinton being hated by the right is certainly true. I wasn't trying to address the electability issue; rather the predictability of their policies.
