It would be nice if exports doubled. It would be nice if deficits came down gradually over the next 10 years. But the goals President Obama set in these spheres will probably be met if everybody in Washington carried on the status quo. They do not entail big change.

The country that exists is not on the right track. It has a completely dysfunctional political system. What was there in this speech that will make us think the next few years will be any different? America will only be governable again if there is a leader who breaks the mold and reframes the debate.

Read these two paragraphs again. (And there is nothing in the missing text indicated by the ellipses that would negate my conclusion.)

The second paragraph is nearly a 100% contradiction to the idea expressed in the first, that deficits would come down gradually over 10 years if the status quo continues to exist in Washington.

For me, it illustrates the shallowness and lack of serious thought that characterizes Brooks arguments. It all sounds good but there is no beef there.
