I understand Ingraham was somewhat of a Romney shill during the primaries, but she seems to have had her eyes opened by the Mittster’s miserable campaign. Via the Daily Caller:
On her Monday program, conservative radio host Laura Ingraham ripped into Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s campaign for its lackluster performance, citing unfavorable polling data showing Romney trailing President Barack Obama, despite the bad economy and high unemployment numbers.
Given that the economy is bad, Ingraham argued Romney should be shoo-in and blamed the Republican Party’s leadership for that not being the case.
“If you can’t beat Barack Obama with this record, then shut down the party,” Ingraham said. “Shut it down, start new, with new people because this is a give-me election, or at least it should be. And the millions of dollars — I keep going back to the million and millions and millions of dollars that are paid to these political consultants election after election. We hire people who have lost previous campaigns, that run campaigns that have failed, who have message campaigns where the message fell flat — and they keep getting rehired. I don’t understand that. I don’t know why those are the people you hire.”
Ingraham correctly places a lot of the blame for Romney’s dismal campaign on the morons who are running it. That would be the GOP consultants and insiders who’ve been telling Republicans since Reagan left office that conservatives can’t win, and that Republicans have to become Democrat light to have a chance. These are doubtless the same people who advised the Mittster to stiff the Tea Party and Governor Palin at the convention and focus on what a warm, fuzzy guy Romney is. This, presumably, would appeal to those moderates with which the beltway consultants are so enthralled and inspire them to storm the castle to vote for him. How’s that working out?
This is going to be a base election. Obama and his campaign understand this and they spent their convention largely appealing to their liberal base. The Mittster’s advisors, on the other hand, haven’t a clue and they spent the convention pretending their base doesn’t exist while staging a coup to guarantee more ”stellar “candidates like Romney are nominated in the future. Obama got a huge bounce out of his convention, Romney got nothing. So again, Ingraham is correct: why do Republicans continue to hire these same idiot consultants election after election after election when they’re proven wrong over and over and over again? With this kind of track record, how are these clowns even able to find work?
As bad as these buffoons are, it would be unfair to place all the blame with them. It was Romney, who touts himself as some kind of managerial genius, who not only hired them, but believes the nonsense they’re peddling. Most of the blame rests with him. To be sure, Mitt’s a terrible candidate, but given Obama’s Carteresque record, he should be running away with this election. The election is eight weeks from tomorrow. If Mitt doesn’t make drastic, wholesale changes to his campaign staff, and I mean yesterday, Obama will win and I doubt it will be close. Let’s just hope Team Mitt doesn’t imperil GOP chances to retake the Senate along the way.
