Shorting supplies support in a falling market..... Short are buyers at lower levels so that if a market is overvalued the function of the shorts is to step in as the price declines and start covering which provides a price cushion. Shorting doesn't mean that you think the company has no value but simply that the price is too high.... a market with no shorts hurts the longs.
