PFICs should be held in IRAs. If you hold them in regular accounts, tax issues may be a bit hairy.

ADRs sometimes mention if they are PFICs. I think it's harder to determine if a company you buy on foreign exchange could be classified as PFIC. I guess that IRS won't knock on the door most of the time when stock position is smallish and the tax difference is tiny too.
