STMicro Q4 earnings beat estimates

(Reuters) - European chipmaker STMicroelectronics (STM.PA) posted fourth-quarter earnings above expectations and said revenues would decline 7 percent to 12 percent sequentially in the first quarter of 2011.

STM, which makes chips for cars, computers, telephones and other consumer products, said its revenue in the fourth quarter was $2.83 billion versus $2.77 billion on average expected by analysts, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Net profit was $219 million or $0.24 per share, compared with a loss of $70 million a year ago. Excluding items, earnings per share were $0.27 in the quarter.

Analysts on average had expected earnings of $0.24 per share.

Analysts had expected revenue in the current first quarter to be $2.56 billion.
