Look at the tanks Russia still has. I find that incredible...

Only down about 1/5th or so from the cold war peak. Fortunately we are very unlikely to have to deal with them rolling in to Western Europe.

And Japan with 44 destroyers?!

Yes Japan is one of the top military spenders in the world. They only spend about 1% of their GDP but they have a pretty large GDP.

What Japan doesn't have is large stocks of weapons and supplies for their aircraft and ships. If they ever get in to a serious war again without this changing it would hamper them.

I notice that the sites figures for frigates (which are smaller than destroyers) include cruisers (which are larger than either), and aircraft carriers (which can displace as much as twenty or more frigates). They probably should have made a separate line for "large ships", or one for cruisers and one for aircraft carriers.
