The biotechnology industry in the United States is on a roll. A handful of companies, MedImmune among them, have finally become profitable, and analysts expect many more to become so over the next few years. The consulting firm Ernst & Young has projected that by about the turn of the century, the industry as a whole should be operating in the black for the first time in its history. Sales and employment in the industry are now rising by about 20 percent a year, according to Ernst & Young. . . . .

Just as people with the foresight to buy into microchip maker Intel Corp. 12 years ago have seen their investment increase more than 40-fold, investors smart enough to pick tomorrow's biotech winners today can look forward to huge gains as the companies grow to maturity. . . .
