what club are you using for your chip shots?

You should be using no more than a 9 iron IMO. I prefer to use my 8 for a majority of chip shots (varies according the severity of slope I need to go up or down and distance from the hole, but as a beginner I recommend using one exclusively to develop the shot.

Next, choke down on grip to the steel of the shaft. Take a fairly narrow, open stance. Majority of your weight should be on your left side. Ball position in the back of your stance, you CANNOT put the ball too far back. Hands pressed forward.

K, now your in position. The swing is relatively simple. Wrists should remain solid (unless it is a Very long chip) and you should strike the ball on a downward path. Don't try to pick the ball off the grass. The club should brush the top of the grass AFTER you make contact with the ball. Follow through and wa la you just hit a chip shot that will land, release and roll like a putt.

Some key points here: Ball back in stance, wrists solid, weight on left side. If you do these three only and keep a pendulum type motion you will hit solid chip shots.

Feel will come with practice. On most flat surfaces the ball should fly 1/3 of its total travel distance. So, when lining up for the chip select a spot on the green 1/3 of the way to the hole (assuming relatively flat green) and try to land the ball on that spot. Do not think about the hole, think about that spot and the hole will magically get in the way.
