I was listening to the LBJ tapes yesterday and for a variety of reasons I often smile while listening to them.

Yesterday was no different. LBJ was talking to an aide who said the he needed to talk to LBJ about a supplemental...very abbreviated and paraphrased exchange....

LBJ: I don't want no supplementals.
Aide: But Mr. President it's only for $30M [M is not a typo]
LBJ: I don't want no supplemental. They [the Republicans] will accuse me of wasting tax payer money.
Aide: But Mr. President, we have $42M in offsets. We'll actually save the taxpayer money with this supplemental.
LBJ: Then, they [the Republicans] will say my budget is fiction and we just made up the budget.
Aide: But Mr. President, this isn't even your budget, it's President Kennedy's budget.
LBJ: I don't think you're listening to what I'm saying.
Aide: Yes sir, we'll kill the supplemental.
