shades - "just hope they stay pro sex".

Social conservatism of the religious right in the U.S. has a much smaller support base in Canada. Southern rural Alberta has a fairly strong social conservative streak, but there's really not much support for this nationally. I think Harper (our new Prime Minister) really had to muzzle his candidates so that the strong ex-Reform Party social conservatism didn't shine through. As far as gay rights, poverty, environmentalist issues, and other social causes, count on the New Democrats to counter the strong representation of corporate interests that the Conservatives will undoubtedly bring. OTOH, if we encounter a major global financial crisis in the next few years, hard to say how the political forces will align. But Canadians responded pretty well in the 1930's to some pretty dark political forces made themselves felt at the time.

All in all, should be a very interesting 4 years.
