Toshiba, Hitachi face massive workforce reductions, says report Semiconductor Business News (08/24/01 23:21 p.m. EST)
TOKYO -- Toshiba Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. will be the next companies in Japan to announce massive workforce reductions, according to reports from the Associated Press.
Toshiba will reportedly cut a staggering 20,000 jobs over the next two years, according to the Associated Press. Some 14,000 jobs would be slashed in Japan, while the remaining positions would be cut overseas, the report said. In total, Toshiba employs about 190,000 workers.
The report did not disclose the job cuts at Hitachi, which has 340,000 employees worldwide.
The moves represent the latest cut backs in Japan. Earlier this week, Fujitsu, Japan's largest computer maker, announced plans to slash 16,400 jobs.
Late last month, NEC Corp. said it would cut 4,000 jobs by next March. |
