The violent gun offenses are by people with no prior record or those with access to guns that no regulations or bans could hinder. A lot of gun crimes don't even result in a pulled trigger. I was in a gun related crime situation myself. I was working 3rd shift and robbed at gun point. There's a lot of these. If you want to go on a crusade to save gas stations and 24 hour thrift stores some money, go for it. Otherwise, you're right when you say it's a band-aid on a festering wound. It accomplishes next to nothing. Rapes are another form of violent crime that don't require guns to pull off, but I bet if a woman puts a slug into her attacker's chest he won't be able to do much. (This is also a debatable topic, as I believe a woman who chooses to defend herself should also go through proper training. Panic can cause the situation to become worse...)
