Telefonos de Mexico Builds its Network With More Tellabs Equipment
MartisDXX System Key to Expansion of Nationwide Business Services
LISLE, Ill., March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Tellabs announced today that it is increasing deployment of its MartisDXX(TM) managed access and transport network solution with Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex).

In 1998, Telmex employed Tellabs to supply MartisDXX systems for its digital leased line services network in the metropolitan area of Mexico City. In this second phase, which also began in 1998, Telmex, telecommunications leader in Mexico, will count on additional MartisDXX nodes, to offer voice, data and video transmission services through an end-to-end managed network throughout the Mexican Republic.

Through its expanded network, Telmex will offer 64/128 kbps digital subscriber lines for private services, nx64 kbps and 2 Mbps for business applications, including LAN interconnect, high-speed Internet access and videoconferencing. Tellabs, in this second phase, is supplying Telmex with 41 SDH backbone nodes, 330 access nodes and 3,500 network terminating units. In addition, over 40 network management workstations are included to provide a complete end-to-end managed network.

Tellabs is also working with Telmex in the design and planning of the network, and is involved in all aspects of installation, execution and training, which should be completed by spring of this year.

According to Gaston Pereira, Tellabs vice president and general manager of Latin America and the Caribbean region, ''In a partnership that continues to grow, we are proud to be working alongside Telmex in its effort to provide a variety of leading-edge services for its customers. As the demand for higher bandwidth in Mexico increases, our MartisDXX solution provides a platform on which Telmex can build new services in the years ahead.''

The MartisDXX system is currently in operation in more than 150 networks in 60 countries worldwide, providing intelligent transport for mobile services including LAN interconnection, digital leased lines, frame relay, PBX and Internet Protocol interconnection.

Telmex is Mexico's principal telecommunications provider. The company operates more than 10 million telephone lines in approximately 21,000 populated areas nationwide. It has the largest local and long-distance network in Mexico, and its fiber optic network of more than 33,000 kilometers is one of the most important in the international context, assuring, with opportunity and efficiency, interconnection with its new competitors.

Tellabs designs, manufactures, markets and services voice and data transport and network access systems. The company's products are used worldwide by the providers of communications services. Tellabs stock is listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market (TLAB).
