Macs are not infallible. As much as I like and prefer OSX it's not bulletproof. There are applications or combinations of applications that will cause it to freeze up like a rock and a hard shutdown is the only option left. Had this happen to me yesterday and still can't find the culprit except for some combination related to using Camino. Go figure. And, the crash report didn't report anything because the whole system froze up!
