OT Anyone know what would cause a monitor to just shut it self off any time it felt like it???

Bad cable or connector.

I had a Dell SyncMaster (Samsung built) where the connector inside the monitor housing, (where the video cable connects to the monitor), developed a broken solder connection. Dang thing would flick on/off/on/off every time I breathed on the computer table.
