Extreme looks like it could give us some problems - the previous post references their gigabit product - and just found this one about their new 10/100M bit/sec switch for $100 per port - layer 2 only - layer 3 added for $50 per port (software upgrade). The Summit48 features two Gigabit Ethernet, aggregate throughput of 17.5G bit/sec. Some quotes from the article:

"Extreme is trying to nab users that might be tempted by the Bay Networks 350T, a 16 port 10/100M bit/sec autosensing switch."

"..it would take five 350Ts to get the same number of 10/100M bit/sec ports he gets with the Summit48, and he wouldn't get the Gigabit Ethernet uplinks."

"Extreme can give this price performance ration because the company is well down the cost curve of the ASICs."

They seem to be comparing this with the older product line. Can anyone shed light on a comparison with the new 350T-HD and 350F-HD products?

Looks like this is the option for adding Gigabit and Layer 3 to the 350 products:

''The new BayStack products are the industry's best-in-class desktop solutions with 10/100 shared media at $75/port and 10/100 switched media at $149/port,'' said Lloyd Carney, executive vice president of the Bay Networks Enterprise Business Group. ''And, Bay Networks' award-winning Accelar routing switches offer BayStack customers the option of adding 1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet transmission speeds and Layer 3 Ethernet switching to their Layer 2 environments. That's
evidence of our commitment to providing our customers with open solutions that meet their current and future connectivity requirements.''
