You didn't answer my question about our military spending. I know it's not PC, but I think we need some form of protectionism from a country where the average hourly wage for an auto worker is $1.50, or $12 a day.
I don't know what form it should take, but if we don't do something, we'll manufacture nothing in the future. Even robotic factories need expensive human maintenance and oversight. When China has grown their own middle-class consumers, they won't even need to sell us stuff on credit to sell at WalMart.

Our problem is we seem to think the entire world is OUR problem. China's advantage is that they don't suffer from this hubris, and are only concerned with their region. So, their order of magnitude less military expenditures than ours seem locally threatening.

Truth be told, we've never disputed that Taiwan is a part of China. They're unlikely to take it back before the Olympics in 2008. I think the Taiwanese should make the best of it, as the British protectorates like Hong Kong did.
