Wed Mar 2, 2011 3:21pm EST
* Sees 2011 spending on chip projects to grow 22 pct

* Sees 2011 spending on chips, chip gear at $47.2 bln (Adds details from statement)

(Reuters) - Spending on chip-making projects could grow by 22 percent globally this year, while spending on chip equipment production will grow by 28 percent, a semiconductor equipment industry association said.

"2011 spending will finally exceed the peak year's 2007 fab spending of $46.4 billion," said Christian Gregor Dieseldorff, an analyst at Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) said.

SEMI expects spending on chips and chip-gear projects to approach $47.2 billion in 2011, almost $9 billion more than last year, as companies look to upgrade existing facilities to avoid overcapacity and oversupply.

Chip bellwether Intel Corp has increased capital expenditure plans to $9 billion in 2011 from $5.2 billion in 2010.

Other chip makers include Advanced Micro Devices Broadcom Corp , Qualcomm and Nvidia . U.S. chip-equipment makers include Applied Materials , KLA Tencor and Lam Research .

The broader S&P Semiconductor Equipment Sub-Industry Index was up nearly 3 percent. (Reporting by Sayantani Ghosh in Bangalore; Editing by Saumyadeb Chakrabarty)
